linkedin for college students

Why college students should immediately open and maintain a LinkedIn Profile.

Recently LinkedIn expanded it's portfolio of products to include a Student Portal.

Students can find internships, entry level positions, and first jobs, and are encouraged to start the process right away.

Before rushing headlong into your job search, read some very important tips below:
LinkedIn Launches New Job Portal for Students Image

Remember, 45% of Companies Check LinkedIn before Hiring!
http://oregonbusinessreport.com/2009/08/45-employers-use-facebook-twitter-to-screen-job-candidates/
And although it may not seem fair, many of them use your Social Media profile to exclude you from being hired.  The above article explains why you might be excluded from being hired.

Here are some tips on using LinkedIn as a Junior or Senior in College.

  1. It is essential for a college student to start early and build out their LinkedIn profile, but if they haven't, then start immediately. Today!
  2. Use the “Summary” Section which is what the public will see.
  3. List a Job as Sorority Chair, or Event Organizer or other Student Position in the Job Section.
  4. Do not make comments like “I am not employed, but I'm a quick learner”
  5. Build a body of work over time, like all social media, LinkedIn Profile should be added to and matured. It's not something you set up and walk away from. Keep working on it, be consistent.
  6. JOIN GROUPS! You can comment on group discussions, attend networking events, speed networking events, and maintain your connections using LinkedIn as your rolodex.
  7. Build a network of professionals around you throughout your Junior and Senior Years by attending LinkedIn sponsored networking meetings. Start NOW! Don't wait.
  8. Do a makeover of your Facebook and Twitter Profiles and Delete innapropriate comments, pictures and compromising material that will hinder your chances of getting hired.
  9. Groups on LinkedIn other than “Job and Career” Groups specific to your field have job listings, and opportunities. Join Professional Groups to get the most out of LinkedIn.
  10. Participate! Like any media, just setting up a profile is not enough. You have to regularly get involved and stay involved to move from “student” to “employed”.

Why You Should Network

What is networking:   Attend networking functions, speednetworking groups, and events to create multiple business contacts across a large swath of industries and diverse range of people.

But Why Should I  Network?
Typical SpeedNetworking, Direct, No Frills, Productive

Survival:  Recent surveys and research indicate that companies hire more from referrals and contacts than ever before.  It continues to be "who you know" rather than what you know when looking for a job.

Profit:  Expanding your network in a recession is smart marketing, as the costs are low, returns high, and you are not compelled to commit large capital to discuss deal making or relationships.

Fun:  Meeting people and having conversations about their lives and dreams can be very entertaining and offers sometimes great inspiration from previously undiscovered sources.

Opportunity:  Finding new sources of expansion, and ways in which you can become better at networking, gain experience, get comfortable with the process, and grow abound when you attend regular events.

Growth:  Life is progress.  Learning to network is a life skill with rich rewards.   Keep your miracles flowing, keep growing, keep planting and sowing.
"Mingled" Event, Less Formal, More Social, Has it's Benefits Too

Some Quick Networking Tips:

If you've never attended a networking event, don't worry, most of the attendees haven't either.  Practice shaking hands in the mirror, pronouncing your name clearly, and enunciating your 1 minute decription clearly and concicely.

Carry cards with you.  Keep them  handy, and people will ask for your business card.  Keep your cards in a separate place from those you collect.

Ninja Tip:  Ask, "What can I do to help you grow your business..."  .  Don't go to networking meetings trying to sell your product.  Look to enlarge other people's network, they will in turn enlarge yours.

Time

Can you remember your first kiss?  Graduation?  Your wedding? Where does the time go?  My dad, taught me an expression that still holds true:

"Lonny people say, 'If I die' .... It's not if I die son.  It's when we die.  We are all going to die."   Of course, a Financial Planner and Executive of an Insurance Company, my dad's profession sort of had us all addressing this fact of life.

What legacy do we leave?  As time floats by, what will you be remembered for?

We surely won't be remembered by the electric company for paying the bill on time.

Is it the sayings or words you have spoken?  Surely they are remembered by your kids, your family, but what about the greater world?  Your spoken words are only heard by a few.  What we say is often less important that what we do anyway, and certainly not permanent.  gOOgle yourself.  What do you find?

What impact will you leave on the world?  I have tweeted and written that we are in a world of words.  The Internet is composed of words, we search using words, we find interesting things composed of words.  Reading is more important than ever, and so is what we write.

Employers have long admitted to searching out our Internet imprint.  Background checks, credit,  old friends, High School Reunion organizers, it seems we are what we put out there.

Be an inspiration today.  Compose something that inspires others.  Keep it up, and leave a legacy of something kind, something good.  Enjoy each moment, and teach others to enjoy those moments, and live in a state of inspired living.  Our words will be remembered and are permanent.

With good words, time becomes our asset.

Social Media: Is it Closing us off to meeting people?

"If everyone is moving forward together than success takes care of itself”  Henry Ford

"Follow Me, and I will make your fishers of men."  Jesus

"We do these things not because they are easy, but because they are hard." JFK

Start realizing that we need to get out and meet people, and keep on meeting people in order to grow networks.  Alot of folks think they have a phobia about meeting people.  "Lonny, I would rather die than meet new people."

Then why are you on social media at all?  There is no substitute for good old fashioned speedmeeting groups, networking groups, going to parties, galas, or events.

Here's a Tweet about that:  ProNetworkBuild
I commented on this Article: RT @CauseWire Do You Have Social Media Overload? http://ow.ly/46uM1 #socialmedia RT @ereleases

Social Media is no substitute for meeting people in person.  As much as Facebook and Twitter and LinkedIn (The Big 3 as I like to call them)  would like us to log on 4 or 5 hours per day, and as much fun as it might be to "Tweet" all day, sometimes we have to put the keyboard down, and start talking to people.

Research has indicated that meeting people 'in person' is good for us, and actually helps us live longer.  Imagine that.  Getting off the sofa and going outdoors again.

Smile.  Have a good time.  Take the pressure off yourself.  Don't go to events with a goal in mind at first, just GO!

what the internet looks like

PEER 1, an IT hosting provider, has produced a visual interpretation of the Internet. It identifies 19,869 autonomous system nodes with 44,344 connections.
The sizing and layout of the autonomous systems are based on their eigenvector centrality, which is a measure of how central to the network each autonomous system is: an autonomous system is central if it is connected to other autonomous systems that are central. This is the same graph-theoretical concept that forms the basis of Google’s PageRank algorithm.
The Map of the Internet image layout begins with the most central nodes and proceeds to the least, positioning them on a grid that subdivides after each order of magnitude of centrality. Within the constraints of the current subdivision level, nodes are placed as near as possible to previously-placed nodes that they are connected to.

Visualizing the Internet in this way helps us see what our own "human" networks should like.  We should be willing to overlap our sphere of influences with other networkers.

If an architect only networks with other architects how is he to find new clients?

Networks need to overlap with other networks to be effective.

Here are a couple of tips to help you reach out to new clients:

     1.  Think outside your normal sphere or comfort zone.  Ask yourself,  "Who are my clients?  Who will buy my product?  How do I reach them?"

     2.  Write these questions down on paper, and refer to it over time.  I have a friend who keeps this on his Daytimer, he is constantly, and perpetually asking himself these questions.  Subsequently, my friend is constantly expanding his network.

     3.  Start TODAY reaching out of your comfort zone, expand your network to new networks, start getting comfortable with the process of overlapping networks.
