Facts Not Hype or Fear

Fearmongering by the mainstream press,  lockstep with Government Officials is generally called propaganda.  The self serving expression of "looming debt crisis"  has been adopted quite nicely by the press.  It is of their own making, this potential Armageddon.

Instead of more blind speculation, and rhetoric, I just thought it might be nice to look at a couple of FACTS... ( God forbid ) so that we are at least armed with some basics as to how we got here, as opposed to the blame game, which get's nobody anywhere.

First it's important to know that total Government receipts in the United States are 4.5 Trillion dollars.  About a third of that is personal income tax, the rest is derived from fees, import taxes, and corporate taxes.  At 4.5 Trillion per year, with no tax increase, ask yourself a simple question:  Does the Government take in plenty of money?

The United States Government takes in more money than any enterprise, corporate or otherwise in the history of mankind.

The Office of Management and Budget prepares the Administration's Budget Proposal to Congress, and maintains documents for the public to review.  The link to those documents is: http://www.whitehouse.gov/omb/budget/Historicals

Here's a chart prepared by the OMB:

The pink line on the far end which runs literally off the chart is the current projected debt, about a ten percent increase over last years record breaking debt.

Now, we hear alot that the National Debt was inherited, and caused by wars with Iraq, and a host of other causes ( the endless blame game )  forgotten is the fact that almost a Trillion dollars was borrowed in the very first month of the Obama Administration when both the Senate and the House of Representatives were under Democrat Control.  This was called the "Stimulus Package".

The Above Chart is a Debt to Jobs Chart.  It shows the creation of new jobs (green line) to the amount of Debt (red line).   Notice that Debt has risen sharply, new job creation is down sharply.   It is not lost upon the American public that the unemployment rate has risen from 6% ( before the Stimulus Package ) to 9.5 percent currently.

When you hear there is a "looming debt crisis"  and you hear the media predict the end of mankind, and emergency remedies, remember, the Government doesn't need any more money, it needs to manage better what it is already taking in.

Women Prefer Showering to Sex

NBCU provides marketing analysis so big conglomerates can leverage buying trends and market products strategically.

NBCU has a  team of primary researchers executing surveys, focus groups, segmentation,  marketplace and consumer research to answer a broad range of business questions and identify growth opportunities across all phases of the digital businesses.

It recently released a report, which the Press has had a field day with making headlines like I have above.  As soon as we put Sex in a headline, we are bound to have a few hits if for no other reason, the curious and pervs will stop by and take a quick read.

Female researchers at NBCU conducted a survey of American men and women across a wide age group.  They were given a list of activities that they could not do without for a month.  Both women and men chose the Internet, then Sleep as their first two choices, it is the third choice where the NBCU report splits hairs.

What makes the headlines of course is that women chose "Taking a Shower" over Sex as their third MUST HAVE, and men chose "SEX"...

Do Women Really Prefer Showering To Sex?

This  begs the age old sexest stereotype that men are more concerned with sex, when other more scientific research indicates women think about sex as often as men.  Some have pointed out that sleep is something we cannot do without, and we can do without a shower or the Internet.  This is probably true.  I also think it is quite odd that the researchers were all women.  Why did NBCU use only women researchers?  Drawing a conclusion that more women prefer the Internet or showering to sex is probably beyond the data available in the report because of the way the questions were asked.

Does NBCU skew it's survey and results in such a manner as to tell the companies that buy it's data what they want to hear?

Some other data that came out from the report:

More women than men own smartphones; and

More women than men own gaming apps.

I for one do not disagree with these results or numbers.  I have done other research that indicates that women outnumber men on Twitter, but not on LinkedIn.  I manage multiple accounts on Twitter for various companies and celebs and I find this to be accurate anecdotally, as well.  Women have a huge
voice on Twitter, and often do a better job than I do.  I do not draw any conclusions from this fact, I just work with it to my best advantage, by:

    A.  Interacting with and paying equal attention to both men and women

    B.  Listening for tips and ideas that I may garner from them;

    C.  Refrain from making unintended comments that might offend either men or women;

    D.  Make strategic alliances with influencers of both persuasions.

One professional I know says that women have it easier on Twitter, as they can post a pic of themselves, and that alone will attract an audience.  I do not disagree with that statement either.  I will state that I just work harder.  I might not be famous, I might not be handsome, but I can still follow good people, and unfollow the deadbeats with the best of em!

Including the ladies.

What is your opinion? Do you buy into this report?  Leave a comment if you like.

Google Goes Social ( Again ) with Plus 1

Google hopes to make another run at Social Media with the Plus 1 Button for blogs and websites.  Google the Search Engine Powerhouse valued at over 100 billion U.S. dollars is introducing the Plus 1 in response to Facebook's "Like" Button or Twitter's "Tweet This".

Forget writers who make predictions about how well this will work.  There is no reason NOT TO INSTALL THE PLUS 1 BUTTON!

Google is by far the largest search engine, and with the Android phone an open source mobile operating system with many software writers jumping on board, it is probably only a matter of time before Droid outpaces iPhone as the most popular mobile operating system.  So with Google making inroads into mobile search it's dominance of the "search engine" game is safe, at least for the time being.

Why is this important?  Any product that Google purchases or invents integrates seamlessly into it's search.  Many people underestimate Twitter for example.  But Google has given priority to tweets in it's search algorithms.   Many SEO firms are trying to develop ways to get better rankings for their clients seen on the Internet, and all the while Twitter would have assisted those rankings.  So NOT developing a Twitter account would  disadvantage clients who don't tweet.  Use this same principle with Blogger.  Google owns Blogger and gives priority ( fair or unfair is not the realm of this article ) to Blogger accounts over Wordpress or other non Google owned blog sites.

So roll with the Plus 1 Button.  Use it, it won't hurt you to add it onto your blog, and you will enhance your visibility and get in early on this new technology.

__________________________________________________

So what does this mean and how to use it right away?  Here are a few tips:

If you are on Blogger?  You are all set, your Plus 1 Button should be up and working over the weekend or as early as last week.

Whether on Blogger or you own your own Website or Blog, I recommend this 5 minute tutorial from Google.  http://www.google.com/webmasters/+1/button/index.html

Are you on Worpress?  Here is the link to WordPress Plug Ins

A quick run down of adding html code.  Or  HTML Basic Trick:

Switch your Blog Editor ( or Website Editor ) to HTML or Edit HTML and mark the spot you want your button with XXXXLLLLL or something that will stand out ( within a long line of html code ) before turning on your editor.   Then
cut/paste the Plus 1 Code and replace the XXXXLLLLL with the code.  When you switch back to Compose or Content from HTML mode, your button should appear.

Remember:  If it's Google, it's about visibility.  By adding the Plus 1 button to your blog posts or web pages now, you are getting more visibility.  Over time, the Plus 1 's will add up.  Visibility IS social media.

Comments are like Crack Cocaine for Bloggers

Motivation for this post was a Tweet I saw in #BlogChat on Sunday night. “Comments are like crack cocaine to a Blogger.” If true, than ReTweets are a blogger's Dealer, and Tweets her/his wallet. Tweeting drives traffic to our blogs, ReTweeting expands our audience. Comments may fuel the addiction, but of their own, they are like preaching to the choir. A comment boosts our ego, encourages us, makes us feel like someone is listening. When someone ReTweets us to their audience, we are enlarging our reach, gaining new readers, the torch is passed.

Twitter is like a hit engine as I posted last week. According to statistics, more blog hits are derived by Tweeting than from SEO ( Search Engine Optimization ) or AdWords Campaigns or any other method. Regardless of topic, the likihood that someone will find your article simply based upon using Google, Bing, Yahoo or Metacrawler organic search is very low. But when we use Twitter and to a lesser degree Facebook to drive traffic we strengthen the odds in our favor.

Being able to write interesting and compelling tweets gives us all a lesson in the Journalistic art of headline writing. Which sounds better? “Man finds sandwich on sidewalk” or “Major New Discovery, Washington, DC Resident Finds New Preservative”
The Ability To Write Compelling Tweets Proves More Valuable Than the Blog Itself

Twitter outpaces Facebook with this phenomena. Now of course there are exceptions, but Twitter drives more blog hits than any other search engine. Stop thinking of Twitter as Social Networking Site for a moment, and think of it as a Search Tool. When we use hashtags, we are making our subject available to the entire Twitterverse. So I might include in that same Tweet such search tags as #Food #Science #Washington, DC.

Rather than obtaining hits/readers from the few dozen or so people who actually might see the tweet live... ( Remember, there are only about 12 tweets above the fold on any computer monitor ) now my tweet may be read by anyone searching for those keywords.

Bloggers and more generally writers should be and are slowly adapting to the world of search engine optimization the better they become at mastering keyword and headline writing on Twitter.

Which brings me back to my main point. Getting ReTweeted may in fact be easier from someone who is searching for a keyword, doing research, or looking to expand their own follower list by typing in keywords in the first place. So when someone uses Twitter as a search engine, and finds your Tweet, you stand a greater chance of being ReTweeted than if you use no hashtags at all. Invariably they are going to open some links and do some reading, and after investing some time, even a small commitment they may A. Comment in a Tweet and mention our blog; B. Comment within the body of the Blog and/or C. ReTweet a TinyURL of our blog to their followers.

So remember, bloggers, when you get a comment, you are getting praise from a follower, someone who is already reading your blog. But when you get a ReTweet, you are expanding your audience, you are growing your network, you are growing your influence. So go for the ReTweet, and thank the person who sends out your Blog URL to others, they are expanding your audience 1,000 percent more than any comment you receive. Comments don't expand your audience, ReTweets expand your audience.

phone booth art

With the ubiquitous cellphone everpresent, rare indeed is the discovery of a good old fashioned phone booth.  Long gone are the booths themselves.  If we are really lucky we can locate an egg shaped aluminum stand.  Bland, and idle, they are relics of days gone by.  Imagine my interest in seeing what looked like an Escher affixed to the side.   Lon Dunn Fairfax, VA  April 13th, 2011.
